What is the difference between Commencement & Graduation
- Commencement: celebrate you and the accomplishments you’ve done this far and will commune to do (which you participated)
- Graduation: completion of your degree. This is when your finish all your degree requirements thus allowing you to get your diploma, will show on your transcript, able to put on your resume and go into further schooling.
Alverno College holds Commencement annually in the month of May. Students who are anticipated to graduate in August or December are able to participate in the May Commencement prior to degree completion if the following criteria are met.
- Undergraduate students: 12 or less credit hours remaining to complete your degree as of the May 2025 Commencement Ceremony.
- Graduate students (except doctoral students):
- Master of Arts in Education: 6 or less credit hours remaining to complete your degree by the May 2025 commencement ceremony.
- Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing: 16 or less credit hours remaining to complete your degree by the May 2025 commencement ceremony.
- Master of Science in Nursing - Advanced Practice Track: 5 or less credit hours remaining to complete your degree by the May 2025 commencement ceremony.
- Master of Science in Community Psychology: 6 or less credit hours remaining to complete your degree by the May 2025 commencement ceremony with substantial progress in Internship 2 as determined by the Department of Community Psychology.
- Doctoral Students
- Doctor of Nursing Practice: successful defense of your DNP Practice Project prior to the May 2025 Commencement Ceremony.
- Doctor of Education: 6 or fewer credits remaining to complete your degree by the May 2025 commencement ceremony and the defense of your dissertation scheduled for a date by no later than July 31, 2025.
- Doctor of Education - Superintendency track: Successful defense of your dissertation prior the May 2025 Commencement Ceremony.
- MSED students are able to participate once completing their Ed.S degree.
