Post-Master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program will prepare a registered nurse to provide advanced comprehensive mental health care for individuals, families, and groups across the lifespan with psychiatric disorders. A holistic, person-centered approach to mental health care is emphasized, including psycho-pharmacological and psycho-therapeutic interventions.

The Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certificate program provides those already possessing a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) with additional course and clinical work to fulfill the requirements to be eligible for national certification as a lifespan PMHNP by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Students who successfully complete an Advanced Psychopharmacology course (MSN 630), a series of three theory and three practica courses, and a 0-credit orientation may complete this certification in four semesters. Students must have successfully completed an Advanced Practice Roles course and courses in Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Physical Assessment, and Advanced Pharmacology in their previous MSN curriculum. If not, those courses must be taken as well to be eligible for certification. A transcript evaluation of the student’s master’s program determines which courses are needed. The program requires 600 practicum hours.

Note: Readiness for initial advanced practice nurse prescriber licensure application in Wisconsin requires a clinical pharmacology course within the three preceding years.
