Accounting (major)

With faster than average job growth and strong starting salaries, accounting adds up to a wise career investment for the math lover. Alverno’s recently redesigned Accounting major prepares you to become a certified public accountant, and who knows where that path could eventually take you — to a role at “Big 4” accounting firm, the launching of your own small business or to a senior executive position at a
major organization.

It’s personal

Accounting is one of the most popular college majors nationwide, and that means that classes are often held in gigantic lecture halls. Not so at Alverno (in fact, we don’t even have lecture halls). Even your introductory accounting classes will typically be 10-15 students — smaller than you’d find at most high schools. You’ll have the opportunity to work one-on-one with your instructors and develop relationships that will last long after you graduate.

Hands-on experience

The real world doesn’t operate out of a textbook, and neither do we. Experiential learning is threaded throughout our curriculum, and you’ll make hands-on, real-world connections starting with your first accounting course. You’ll get plenty of practice with the technology used by accountants, including Excel and tax and auditing software, and you’ll learn from professors who have in-the-field experience as small business owners, auditors, financial analysts and income tax professionals. Your two required internships will give you additional opportunities to put your classroom skills to work. By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to sit for the CPA licensing exam.

Internships for the Business major

Thanks to Alverno’s location in Wisconsin’s biggest city, you’ll have easy access to fantastic internship possibilities, from small businesses to massive Fortune 500 companies. Past students have interned with Baird, Harley-Davidson, Fiserv, Johnson Controls, Northwestern Mutual, Quad Graphics and H&R Block, among other sites. Our faculty can help you find the best opportunities to fit your personal and professional goals.

How you can use your degree

Accountants are in demand, and this degree will prepare you to work in a variety of environments: with small and large businesses, nonprofit organizations, government and individual taxpayers. You may decide to work as an accountant or auditor throughout your career, or that may be just the first step to other financial leadership positions.

Alverno is internationally known for its unique abilities-based curriculum, which will help you become a strong communicator, leader, critical thinker and problem-solver — all skills prized by employers. In fact, employers often tell us that Alverno grads stand out because they’re confident, agile and job-ready on Day 1. So you won’t only be prepared to crunch numbers: you’ll also be ready to manage a team, make ethical decisions, and deliver a poised presentation to your chief financial officer or board of directors.
