Pupil services and special education administrators are licensed to direct and supervise all pupil services and special education services within a local school or school district. While special education administration, including budget and grants management, is a large part of the position, individuals in these roles are often responsible for a wide range of pupil support systems and legally mandated services within a district. Pupil services administrators often maintain responsibility for school health services, English as a Second Language (ELL) services, alternative education, services for students and families who are homeless, school counseling services, school social work and psychological services and special education programs and services. They must have a wide range of knowledge in school law and must maintain current knowledge of changes to federal and state legislation as well as understanding the impact of current case law on school districts. This program builds on Alverno’s administrative leadership program and includes courses specific to the work of special education and pupil services directors: special education and pupil services legal requirements, frameworks for special education and pupil services leadership, and an internship in the field with an experienced administrator serving as a director of pupil services and special education. Completion of these courses in conjunction with the core course work in the administrative leadership program will lead to a Masters Degree and licensure in both Principal (DPI #51) and Director of Pupil Services and Special Education (DPI #80) in Wisconsin.
