MUY-129 Music Preprofessional Seminar (1 credit)

This course will address a variety of topics of concern to the developing music therapist. Guest speakers, field trips, and organized volunteer opportunites will expose you to all aspects of this career. You will learn how to create a resume, apply for jobs, create a new position, and organize and run a student organization to further professional development.

MUY-160 Orientation in Music Therapy (2 credits)

Offered Fall Term only. The student concentrates on the concepts and theoretical basis for the use of music as a therapeutic tool in achieving and maintaining physical and mental health. In classroom and lab settings, they view the scope of the profession as they identify clinical settings where music therapists are employed. They develop the ability to articulate their knowledge and skills specific to the profession and to cite sources of published journals and research specific to music therapy. (Non-majors welcome)

MUY-171 Clinical & Lab Experience 1/Geriatrics (2 credits)

This course requires concurrent participation in a designed off-campus music therapy clinic for one to two hours per week. The student works to identify the social-interaction skills most appropriate to working with the elderly. The weekly on-campus class sessions focus on the possible uses of music as therapy with this population, using a variety of therapeutic interventions.

Prerequisite(s): MUY-160, Take concurrent with MUY-171L.

MUY-272 Clinical & Lab Experience 2: Developmental Disabilities (2 credits)

Concurrent with this course, the student participates in a designated off-campus music therapy clinic. They indentify the social-interaction skills most appropriate to working with persons with cognitive disabilities and attempts to demonstrate their effective use of them. Weekly on-campus class sessions focus on current literature and various treatment techniques.

Prerequisite(s): MUY-160 ; MUE-119 registration.

MUY-273 Clinical & Lab Experience 2: Developmental Disabilities (2 credits)

MUY-361 Psychology of Music 1 (3 credits)

The student explores the effect of sound on human behavior. They focus on the physical basis of music and on the perception of its elements. The study of musical behavior follows, as related to theories of neurophysiology and learning.

Prerequisite(s): MUY-273 or by special permission of instructor, if a music therapy major.

MUY-362 Psychology of Music 2/Research (3 credits)

This course is designed to help the student develop skills that enable their to effectively carry out the ongoing observation and evaluation that are basic to the role of the music therapist. They learn to evaluate, improve, and professionally communicate music therapy procedures and results through the study of the research process, measuring and evaluating research, and designing and conducting a research project specific to the field of music therapy.

MUY-363 Creative Music Making (2 credits)

The student learns basic principles of performance on the autoharp, electronic keyboard, and other portable instruments. In addition to developing performance skills for accompaniment purposes, they study song-leading and improvisation skills that can be used to facilitate/motivate client performance in varied health-care settings.

Prerequisite(s): MUE-119 or MUE-219 or MUA-GT1

MUY-461 Theoretical Foundations of Music Therapy (3 credits)

Offered Fall Term only. The student gains a more sophisticated understanding of how music influences human behavior. They analyze the elements of a variety of treatment frameworks and correlate them to music therapy procedures. They extend this analytic process as they design frameworks for application to music therapy treatment.

MUY-462 Design & Appl in Music Therapy (4 credits)

Using a treatment framework they identified in MUY-461, the student designs and implements music therapy procedures in a clinical setting. They demonstrate analytical expertise as they make decisions about the assessment, treatment, evaluation, and implementation of music therapy procedures. They prepare written documentation with rationale tosupport the choices they make. Offered spring term only.

Concurrent with this course, the student participates in a designated off-campus psychiatric music therapy clinic. Class sessions fouces on clinical documentation as the student explores treatment frameworks and their specific application.

MUY-480A Music Therapy Clinical Internship (1 credit)

This course prepares the music therapy student for internship with an external location by creating learning experiences to determine what aspects are most important to the student, location, setting, & student support and creation of an action plan to apply and interview for the 1200-hour external internship approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) or Affiliated with Alverno College under the supervision of a board-certified music therapist.

MUY-480B Music Therapy Clinical Internship (1 credit)

This course prepares student for internship and professional life deepening connection with the AMTA Professional Code of Ethics, the American Music Therapy Association Standards of Clinical Practice and Scope of Practice. A variety of experiences drawing relevance to clinical practice and existing knowledge base of student to practice reflexive thinking in a variety of clinical situations. Students will also be guided through the application process for the 1200-hour external internship approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) or Affiliated with Alverno College under the supervision of a board-certified music therapist.

MUY-480C Music Therapy Clinical Internship (1 credit)

This course will prepare the student for the external internship and professional life through budgeting, developing business plans, preparing for the CBMT board certification examination, a review of pre-internship hours, and a final musical proficiency review prior to external internship. External internship must be completed within 24 months following the completion of on-campus coursework, or any time concurrent with coursework. The student completes a 1,200-hour internship supervised by a board-certified music therapist in a facility approved by AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) of affiliated with Alverno College. The internship is facilitated through the College, and the College is the recipient of the intern's mid and final assessments. During the internship, the student is engaged in further development of her skills and knowledge as a clinical music therapist. After successful completion of the internship, they are eligible to take the board certification examination to gain the professional designation of Music Therapist-Board Certified.
