This major is for those who love working with young children. Students are licensed to teach children from birth to age eight, usually third grade. With an emphasis on young children, students become an expert in child development and how to foster a love of learning in young children.
The Education Birth-Third Grade initial licensure majors/licensures/specializations are open to all genders and are largely available online, including the Paraprofessional to Teacher Licensure program for undergraduate students, the programs are: EBT.C.BSE. and EBT.D.BSE.
Traditional undergraduate students complete the bachelor's degree and complete student teaching.
Paraprofessional to Teacher Licensure students complete licensure coursework and may either complete student teaching as an undergraduate or graduate with Educational Studies and complete the student teaching as post-baccalaureate or graduate student. The program creates a streamlined path to licensure for practicing paraprofessionals who have an associate degree (or at least 48 semester credits), but not a bachelor’s degree. In 24 months, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Education and are eligible for a Wisconsin teaching license.
Graduate students enter the program with a completed bachelor's degree in any field and complete their coursework and student teaching during their pathway to licensure and a Master of Arts in Education degree.
Classes are taught in a hybrid format with both online and in-classroom sessions, and other course work may fall within the regular 15-week semester. Each student must complete 18 weeks of student teaching.
