This major prepares students to teach in kindergarten through ninth grade. Students gain extensive field experiences, starting the first year, and a full semester of student teaching. Students take content courses especially designed to ensure they have a solid knowledge base of the content needed to teach across grade levels in mathematics, science, social students, and English language arts. Students have classroom experiences that span the grades they are able to teach.
The K-9th Grade General Education initial licensure majors/licensures/specializations are open to all genders and are largely available online, including our Paraprofessional to Teacher Licensure program. For undergraduate students, the program is KMS.D.BSE.
Traditional undergraduate students complete their bachelor's degree and complete student teaching as undergraduates.
Paraprofessional to Teacher Licensure students complete the licensure coursework and may either complete student teaching as undergraduates or graduate with Educational Studies and complete their student teaching as post-baccalaureate or graduate students. This program creates a streamlined path to licensure for practicing paraprofessionals who have an associate degree (or at least 48 semester credits) but not a bachelor’s degree. In 24 months, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Education and are eligible for a Wisconsin teaching license.
Graduate students enter the program with a bachelor's degree in any field and complete coursework and student teaching during their pathway to licensure and a Master of Arts in Education degree.
Classes are taught in a hybrid format with both online and in-classroom sessions, and other course work may fall within the regular 15-week semester. Each student must complete 18 weeks of student teaching.
